HTC takes to the skies for new ad campaign
?Update: We've added HTC's first teaser trailer for this ad campaign after the break.
The HTC One series launches in Europe next week, and HTC's pulling out all the stops in the marketing effort for its new smartphones -- the One X, One S and One V. The new marketing strategy, dubbed "As Recommended By", sees HTC bringing fans and enthusiasts on-board to showcase leading features of their new phones.
The first commercial for the One X features amateur photographers Nick Jojola and Tony Mac, and challenges them to shoot what HTC describes as the "world's first freefall fashion shoot" using the phone. The results will be unveiled when the ad launches next Wednesday, April 4, but for the moment HTC's released a few photos showing how the whole thing went down.
As you'll recall from MWC, the One X's 8MP ImageSense camera is a widely-hyped feature, which aims to deliver much-improved image quality and faster capture speeds thanks to a dedicated image chip and RAW format support.

Rick Santorum on Gay Marriage (No Surprises Here) | Queer Landia
?Is anyone saying same-sex couples can?t love each other? I love my children. I love my friends, my brother. Heck, I even love my mother-in-law. Should we call these relationships marriage, too??-Rick Santorum
This is one of the most ridiculous things I?ve heard anyone say about gay marriage. Presumably, he is not in a romantic relationship with his children, friends, brother, or mother-in-law. I?m giving him the benefit of the doubt here, whether justified or not. His statement doesn?t even make sense to me. Is he denying that same-sex couples have a romantic relationship, which is why it makes sense to compare it to other non-romantic, non-sexual relationships? Or is he trying to suggest that, if people of the same sex are in a relationship, then they are also prone to having ?inappropriate? relationships with others in their lives?
?If the Supreme Court says that you have the right to consensual [gay] sex within your home, then you have the right to bigamy, you have the right to polygamy, you have the right to incest, you have the right to adultery. You have the right to anything. Does that undermine the fabric of our society? I would argue yes, it does. ? That?s not to pick on homosexuality. Okay, I was wrong. ?This one makes much less sense. I?m ?not even going to try to figure this one out. He can?t really be comparing gay sex to incest, can he? ?Ugh. ?Yes, I already know the answer to that. The scary thing is that, if he is the Republican nominee, there are a LOT of people who would blindly vote for him simply because he?s the nominee. I?m pretty sure my parents would, sad as that makes me. My mom, who lives in the South, told me, to my surprise, that if Obama was a good president, she would vote for him to have another term, yet she recently said she wouldn?t vote for him, feeling he hadn?t done anything to impress her. ?I?m pretty sure Rick Santorum wouldn?t either. Let?s just hope he doesn?t get that chance.

Biden to paint Romney as proponent of outsourcing
WASHINGTON (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden is seeking to portray Republican Mitt Romney as a proponent of outsourcing, using a speech in Iowa to undercut Romney's appeal to voters as a business executive and job creator.
In Davenport, Iowa, Biden planned to tell employees at an engineering firm Wednesday that Romney had supported tax cuts that support companies that create jobs overseas and vetoed a bill as Massachusetts governor that would have prevented the state from outsourcing contracts to firms overseas.
"We're both talking about tax cuts to manufacturers. The difference is: Our tax cuts go to companies that create jobs over here. Governor Romney's tax cuts go to companies that create jobs overseas," Biden said in excerpts of his speech released by the Obama campaign.
Biden has sought to frame some of the key issues in the 2012 election, holding events in Ohio and Florida in recent weeks to offer rebuttals to Republican presidential challengers. The focus on Romney and outsourcing underscores a key tactic for Obama's campaign: Assailing Romney's work in Massachusetts and as head of Bain Capital to raise doubts about how he would guide an economy that has sought to rebound from a deep recession.
Andrea Saul, a Romney spokeswoman, said Biden was "part of an administration that has done more to devastate the middle class than any in modern history," citing high unemployment, plummeting home prices and rising gas prices. "With that kind of record, it's no surprise that the Obama White House has taken to attacking a proven job creator like Mitt Romney."
At PCT Engineered Systems in Davenport, Biden planned to cite a rise of more than 400,000 manufacturing jobs in the past two years and highlight efforts by the Obama administration to provide incentives for companies to bring jobs back to the United States from overseas. "After years of hearing about outsourcing, a new word has come into our vocabulary: insourcing. Jobs that left the United States are coming back," he said.
The vice president was pointing to Romney's decision to veto a bill approved by the Massachusetts legislature in 2004 that would have barred the outsourcing by vendors doing business with the state. "That resulted in millions of dollars flowing to companies running call centers in India," Biden says.
"Mitt Romney has been remarkably consistent ? as an individual investor, a businessman, as governor of Massachusetts, and now as a candidate for president," Biden says. "Remarkably consistent. Consistently wrong."

Conn. man accidentally dials 911 while stealing
SOUTHINGTON, Conn. (AP) ? Authorities say a Connecticut man accidentally dialed 911 from his cellphone while stealing about 700 pounds of scrap metals.
Police say the 46-year-old man was arrested after the robbery from a Southington merchant.
WFSB-TV reports he was charged Thursday with third-degree criminal trespassing and sixth-degree larceny. He was released on bond and is scheduled to appear in court April 2.

Inland Night Lights: Computer Communication Eroding Human ...
Here's a discussion about a feeling I have frequently.
I think this has to do with spending a lot of time on the computer.
I come home lots of nights and feel absolutely invisible. Talking to the birds and my baby helps. Listening to music helps. Cleaning house helps. Any action performed in the three dimensions that we physically live in, helps.
The problem is that when you do something for 40 hours a week, that is long, long hours of behavioral conditioning. All those computer, screen hours are spent in a place where my immediate location is irrelevant---all I'm doing is being the eye in the sky (eye in the screen) tapping on a keyboard, plugged into the hive mind. I am not "in" the present.
And, looking around, I see that lots and lots of people are in the same boat. Do they have that weird feeling by the end of the day? People on that thread blame the original poster for smoking pot, but that probably relieves his symptoms, rather than exacerbating them; besides, he says he had this problem long before he ever smoked pot. I would imagine pot would help, alcohol would aggravate...in fact the alternative smokes I favor do help quite a bit, if only to loosen up the clenched jaw that results from a day in the void digesting and regurgitating the rotten news of the day in broadcast format. So there I am in my head. But only in my head.
I might need to get a baby bird companion. When Bernie was here with me he helped a lot. Lots of work though.
Besides, that doesn't change the fact that when you spend 8 hours in two dimensions, existing not in your body but only your mind, it is an alteration of reality--the reality that the human mind has dealt in for millenia.
Suddenly, all of humanity stares into screens for most of the day.
This is why I am afraid maybe I agree with the responding person who says the OP's problem is a spiritual ache because he's coming to the realization that we all are doomed.
I think it is possible that people are literally unable to save themselves from tyranny because they have been coerced/tricked into living in two dimensions only, and the actual work of self-governing must be done in three dimensions---the dimensions in which people actually have conversations with each other.
People are losing the ability to communicate, to bridge differences. I am seeing this before my own eyes. In the workplace, computers have been an effective way for upper-upper echelon managers to ignore the effects of their edicts upon the troops. Send an email or a memo, never talk to or interact with the employees, much less painful to lay them off fire them. The role of the computer in corporate culture is a sociological study that I'll be guessing has never actually taken place, despite a world rich with opportunity. Why aren't universities and think tanks studying a change in human communications that has massive everyday impacts upon human behavior?
I am thinking that this might just be because computers and living in two dimensions enhances the ability to deal with multiple-choice options (searching) but does nothing for one's ability to imagine or intuit new ways of doing things..in the three dimensions.
It is a terrible problem, because the computer also makes knowledge-sharing possible in a way it never was before. We are all connected to the hive mind through the wires.
But is it good for democracy?
I know self-governing seems tantalizingly possible through the Net. But I also know those Arab Spring uprisings brought together a whole bunch of demonstrators who knew what they wanted, but did not have the solid community structures to step in and take over governance. There are certainly communications tools available in a way that never has been possible before.
But, when one considers how the computer has impacted everyday relationships, there are troubling signs. If people cannot even make eye contact in the elevator---if they must have their eyes on their hand-held device the whole time---are these people one can expect to communicate enough with others to create democratic communities?
People need to be able to be in the present with other people. "Occupy" knew that, which is why they did what they did. The rest of the world? They seem to be perfectly fine with the idea that someone else will do the job of democracy..for them.
(Overheard: discussion about race. "Have you ever seen any Japanese homeless people?" says one person. The other agrees, there are no Japanese homeless people.
Except for the really nice Japanese kid who slept in our carport for a year and a half and read textbooks every night. Really quiet kid who would chase off the drug addicts. Never bothered anyone.
"Work ethic" was another phrase I heard...but I can't hear most of the conversation. Which is probably a good thing.)

The young singer will release the full-length, official video for her latest track, "Give Your Heart A Break," on April 2. But she's offered fans a very quick peek at it online and it looks like Demi will be played a bit of sexy hide-and-seek with a mystery man during the shoot.
“‘Give Your Heart a Break’ isn’t a song about having a broken heart,” Lovato said last week. “This is a song about faith, it’s a song about fighting for the one you love.”

Pope decries Mexico violence, urges change in Cuba
ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI denounced the drug-fueled violence wracking Mexico and urged Cubans to use dialogue to find new models to replace Marxism as he began a pilgrimage Friday that will take him to both countries.
Benedict spoke to reporters after breakfast aboard a special Alitalia flight carrying him to central Mexico later in the day. The pope said "idolatry of money" lies behind the violence that has claimed more than 47,000 lives in Mexico since a government crackdown began in 2006.
On Monday, Benedict will leave Mexico for Cuba, where he said that it is "evident that Marxist ideology as it was conceived no longer responds to reality," and he urged Cubans to "find new models, with patience, and in a constructive way."
The comment about Marxism, in response to questions from a journalist, was as blunt as anything his predecessor, John Paul II, made during his groundbreaking 1998 trip to Cuba, though the earlier pope is widely credited with helping bring down socialism in eastern Europe.
Benedict cautioned that "this process requires patience and also decisiveness."
The journalist referred to reports that dissidents in Cuba are still routinely harassed and arrested, including in the weeks leading up to Benedict's visit.
Benedict said that the church wants "to help in the spirit of dialogue to avoid trauma and to help bring about a just and fraternal society, as we want in the whole world."
"We want to collaborate in this sense, and it's obvious that the church is always on the side of freedom, freedom of conscience, freedom of religion," the pope said.
Benedict said John Paul's visit to Cuba ushered in a slow process of dialogue and cooperation between church and state on the island.
During that trip, John Paul made a clear if cautious call for then-President Fidel Castro to open up Cuban society, take steady if gradual steps toward democracy and give the church a greater voice. He also called for the release of political prisoners while giving Castro what he wanted, a condemnation of the U.S. embargo.
Asked about Benedict's statement, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez said the government respects all opinions. "We consider the exchange of ideas to be useful. Our people have deep convictions developed over the course of our history," he said, adding that the Cuban system "is a democratic social project ... which is constantly perfecting itself."
Talking about Mexico, Benedict said that violence, and the lust for money, were destroying that predominantly Catholic country's young people in particular.
Benedict said that the "great responsibility of the church is to educate the conscience, teach moral responsibility and strip off the mask (from) the idolatry of money that enslaves mankind, and unmask the false promise, this lie that is behind" the drug culture.
The weeklong trip to Mexico and Cuba, Benedict's first to both countries, will be a test of stamina for the pope, who turns 85 next month. At the airport on Friday in Rome, the pope used a cane, apparently for the first time in public, as he walked about 100 yards (meters) to the airliner's steps.
Papal aides, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Benedict has been using the cane in private for about two months because it makes him feel more secure, not for any medical reason. Last fall, Benedict started using a wheeled platform to navigate the vast spaces of St. Peter's Basilica during ceremonies. The Vatican has said that device was employed to help the pope save his energy.
John Paul II was just 58 when he made the first of five visits to Mexico, building a passionate adoration among many Mexican Catholics.
So far Mexicans have shown less excitement about the new pope's arrival in Guanajuato, a deeply conservative state in sun-baked central Mexico,
The once-empty sidewalks along the pope's route into the state's largest city, Leon, begin to fill with hundreds of local church members Friday, more than six hours before the pontiff was scheduled to land in the country. Teenagers in matching white baseball caps screamed cheers in unison, while adults played tambourines and guitars on elevated platforms.
The main campground in Leon, meant for tens of thousands of pilgrims, remained empty, however. The only evidence of preparations were about a dozen portable toilets, a single police patrol and a group of three men and a woman putting a tent to sell T-shirts and photos of Benedict.
Church officials say as many as 300,000 people are expected for Sunday's Mass and Carlos Aguiar, president of the Mexican Episcopal Conference, said he expected the faithful to begin arriving later Friday.
Benedict is visiting a church battling to overcome painful setbacks that include legalized abortion and gay marriage in the capital of the most populous Catholic country in the Spanish-speaking world.
Guanajuato's constitution declares that life begins at conception and bars abortion with extremely limited exceptions. Seven women were jailed there in 2010 for the deaths of their newborns and later released. The women said they had miscarriages, not abortions.
Benedict's church is encouraging more such laws across Mexico, and a measure before Congress would strip away many of the remaining restrictions on religion that were imposed during conflicts more than a century ago.
Church leaders also are trying to overcome a scandal over the most influential Mexican figure in the church.
The Rev. Marcial Maciel founded the Legionaries of Christ order, which John Paul II praised as a model of rectitude. But a series of investigations forced the order to acknowledge in 2010 that Maciel had sexually abused seminarians and fathered three children. Church documents released in a book this week reveal the Vatican had been told of Maciel's drug abuse and pederasty decades ago.
The biggest crowd in Guanajuato's main city Thursday evening appeared to be the thousands of youths attending a convention of evangelical Protestant missionaries a the highway exit leading to Bicentennial Park, where Benedict will deliver Mass on Sunday.
Light of the World Church spokesman Ezequiel Zamora said the convention had been planned long before the pope's visit was announced, and the evangelical church had no intention of trying to upstage the pontiff.

Canseco still wants to play pro baseball in 2012

The 47-year-old former major league slugger still wants to play professional baseball in 2012. Canseco, once a feared Bash Brother for the Oakland A's, is willing to return to the independent league to keep his career alive. He'd still like to sign with a team in the Mexican league, even though it suspended him earlier this month after allegedly refusing to undergo a doping test.
How's this for a wild card: Canseco says if there's a Major League Baseball team willing to take a risk on him, he can still hit 30 to 40 home runs this season.
"I've got plenty of power," he said Tuesday by phone from Las Vegas.
Canseco showed flashes of it last season as a player/manager for the Yuma Scorpions of the North American League.
The former AL MVP hoped he had a deal to play this season for the Quintana Roo Tigers. Mexican league president Plinio Escalante claimed Canseco refused to take the test, which was treated the same as testing positive in the league. Quintana Roo Tigers team president Cuauhtemoc Rodriguez said doping control doctors advised Canseco against taking the test because he was using a medicine to produce testosterone.
Canseco, who last played for the Chicago White Sox in 2001, said he needed a prescription for testosterone treatment for the last five or six years. Canseco was shown using testosterone-boosting gels in the 2008 A&E documentary, "Jose Canseco: The Last Shot."
"I think the whole world knows I've been on testosterone therapy," Canseco said. "My levels are normal for what the 47-year-old levels are. They didn't want to accept that, I guess."
Canseco, of course, has long admitted using steroids. In Canseco's 2005 book, "Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant `Roids, Smash Hits, and How Baseball Got Big," he claimed he introduced Oakland Athletics teammate Mark McGwire and other stars to steroids and performance-enhancing drugs. He wrote about injecting himself and McGwire in bathroom stalls, and how the effects of the drugs were the reason he hit 462 career home runs.
Canseco still has mixed emotions about writing the book.
"I do in a way, because I suffered a lot," he said. "My family suffered a lot. I'm still suffering because of it. I can't get a job in Major League Baseball managing, coaching, whatever. I paid the price to tell the truth. But if it fixed the game, if it saved a kid's life along the way, it's worth it. It's a constant back and forth battle.
"When you look at it, in the big picture, it did fix Major League Baseball. It did correct everything. I believe there is no more steroid use in baseball. It changed the game, for the better."
Canseco used his very active Twitter account to reach out and apologize to his former manager, Tony La Russa. On March 8, Canseco posted, "(at)TonyLaRussa boy did I mess up by writing that book tell big mac i am sorry."
La Russa retired over the winter after winning the World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals. McGwire, 10th on the career home run list with 583, is their hitting coach. He was hired after the 2009 season, and the following January he admitted using steroids when he was a player.
Canseco doesn't expect either man to accept his apology.
"No, they're not supposed to call me," he said. "They can't call me. I'm like the leper or the pariah. No one from Major League Baseball can even talk to me because I told the truth and fixed the game."
Canseco said there are "couple of years" left in his bat, even his legs can no longer produce the 40-40 speed he had once. Canseco once claimed to have squandered the roughly $45 million he earned over his career, pawned his World Series rings and purged his memorabilia collection to try and satisfy debts against him. But he said he's driven to play by his love of the game, not money.
"There's no reason to give up when you love the game," he said. "Believe me, you don't make money playing this stuff. You don't make money playing independent baseball. They pay nothing. I can make more money not playing baseball than playing baseball."
If he strikes out in his bid for a baseball comeback, Canseco would like to manage, in any league.
"I have so much information, so much knowledge of the game," he said.
He has kept his name in the spotlight the last few seasons with celebrity boxing matches, an MMA bout, reality TV, and he even competed on Donald Trump's television show, "The Celebrity Apprentice." He recently called out former NBA superstar Shaquille O'Neal on Twitter to fight him in an MMA-style bout. He says O'Neal is open to the fight and believes it could be the next big thing in a post-MLB career stuffed with the wild and wacky to keep afloat.
Canseco even cut short an interview because he had just parked at a Las Vegas gym to train.
"I'm about to work out," he said. "I need to gain 30 pounds if I'm going to fight Shaq."

"If you want to boost your withholdings and claim 30 exemptions and get your whole paycheck back, you can do that," says Howard Samuels, a CPA in New York City. "But when you do your tax return you're going to be in a world of trouble."
That's because while you don't want to let the government hold onto your money all year long (in the form of an April refund to you), the government isn't in the money lending game, either. Tax rules require a certain pay-as-you-go tax behavior, and if you don't meet minimum tax requirements, you could owe some fees in the end. Ask any self-employed person who's required to make estimated tax payments every quarter.
Take solace, though: You're not losing serious cash. "With current rates on CDs averaging just over one percent, you really aren't missing out on much," says Lynne Strynchuk, a financial planner in Melbourne, Fla. "And given that you would need to have that money within one year, it would be a mistake to invest it in a riskier security." There's also the fact that after you adjusted your withholding, you'd have to set that money aside and never touch it. Maybe you're a paragon of self control, but many people aren't, and that seems like a risky game to play.

I was having a conversation with a CEO who runs a coaching business that uses Olympians to deliver motivational speeches to executive board members. We were debating the function of HR and its associated titles. He said that we need to get rid of the term ?human resources?. He questioned what does HR manage? Resources?
To quote: ?Shouldn?t the role of HR professionals be to empower every individual within the organisation to perform at their best instead?? He went so far as to say HR directors should start adopting the title of ?chief performance director?.
I was then conversing with an HR blogger based in the States. She was sending me her HR Carnival submission and to my surprise I noticed her title: ?Cathy Missildine-Martin, SPHR, chief performance officer for Intellectual Capital? on her signature. So I repeated the above story to her and said:

A. Well we have been through this whole: ?we need to be more strategic? and the policy/ police/compliance phases. I think now we have a huge opportunity to be who we want to be. This recession has made CEO?s more demanding of HR, and I believe there are pockets of excellence. I don?t feel we are there yet, and yes we have a long way to go, but there is progress on the whole ?adding value to the business? front.
Q. How can you use metrics to measure performance?
A. I can go on for days with this. HR has to use metrics, period. We have to be able to show how we add value to the business and how our employees add value to the business. So, to put it simply it?s all about, what does it cost and how much value is added? We as HR professionals have to make sure analytical capability is added to our list of competencies.
Q. Why did you come up with the title of chief performance officer?
A. Because it is what I do and what I think HR practitioners need to be focused on. No more generalist, no more HR admins, we are about getting the right people, in the right seats, engaged and working to their highest potential.
Q. How could the title of ?HR performance assistant/officer/director etc?transform the perception of HR?
A. It?s putting our money where our mouth is. We are no longer about pushing papers and picnics, we are about performance, and we mean it!
