Intel Israel more than doubles exports, mulls new investment

TEL AVIV (Reuters) - Intel's Israeli subsidiary more than doubled its exports in 2012 to $4.6 billion and is seeking to bring manufacturing of the company's next generation of chips to Israel.

Intel's exports, which rose 109 percent from $2.2 billion in 2011, were boosted by the start of production of chips using 22 nanometer technology at its Kiryat Gat plant in southern Israel, which is now operating at full capacity.

Intel, the world's No. 1 chipmaker, will build chips over the next two to three years with features measuring just 14 nm in Ireland and the United States but the company is already thinking about where it will produce 10 nm chips. The narrower the features, the more transistors can fit on a single chip, improving performance.

Intel Israel executives said they would like to see 10 nm production in Israel.

"The average life of a technology is two to six years so we need to be busy to get the next technology, 10 nanometer," Maxine Fassberg, general manager of Intel Israel, told a news conference on Sunday. "We need to get a decision far enough in advance to be able to upgrade the plant. So for 10 nanometer, decisions will need to be made this year."

Fassberg said upgrading the existing Fab 28 plant in Israel would require a lower investment than building a new plant but would still involve several billion dollars.

Intel Israel has in the past received government grants to help with the costs of its investments and Fassberg told Reuters the company was "constantly in talks with the government".

Intel has invested $10.5 billion in Israel in the past decade, including $1.1 billion in 2012, and has received $1.3 billion in government grants.

The company accounted for 20 percent of Israel's high-tech exports last year and 10 percent of its industrial exports, excluding diamonds.

"If Intel had not increased its exports, Israel's high-tech exports would have shrunk by 10 percent," Intel Israel President Mooly Eden said.

Most of Intel Israel's exports - $3.5 billion - came from its chip manufacturing activities.

Intel is Israel's largest private employer, with 8,542 workers, up 10 percent from 2011. The company has two plants - in Jerusalem and Kiryat Gat - as well as four research and development centers.

Eden said Intel was also committed to investing in start-ups, having invested in 64 Israeli companies since 1996. In July its global investment arm Intel Capital said it would expand its operations in Israel.

Amazon Takes Redshift, Its Cloud-Based Data Warehouse Killer, Global

amazon redshiftAmazon’s onslaught in disrupting enterprise IT services continues. The company today announced that it would be making Redshift — its cloud-based data warehousing service — widely available, after first launching the product on a limited release at the end of November. The product, part of Amazon Web Services, is aimed both at startups who are looking for cost-effective ways of storing data for their new services, as well as larger or more established enterprises that want to cut operational costs, and possibly capex as well. Amazon also announced a number of third parties — including SAP, Cognizant,?IBM,?Informatica, Tableau,?Attunity, Actuate, Pentaho, Talend, Birst, Roambi and Pervasive — are also linking up with Redshift?to help integrate the product into companies’ wider IT services, by also offering analytics and other services on top of it. MicroStrategy?and Jaspersoft were the two early partners Amazon announced for IT integration. These partners are an essential component in Amazon’s “big data” play — made at a time when businesses are not only amassing and storing more data, but using it regularly as part of their business processes. It will be interesting to see whether Amazon itself eventually begins to move further into this service layer itself, going beyond more basic storage solutions. Amazon is offering the service at a sliding scale depending on usage. Amazon says that pricing for an on-demand, XL Node, 2 terabyte storage starting at $0.85 per hour per Node, and a reserved instance, one-year contract for the same service at $0.215. The second class of service, the?8XL Node, 16TB storage, is priced between $0.912 for a three-year, reserved instance deal and $6.80 per Node for the on-demand option. That works out, it says to?a terabyte of data coming in at less than $1,000. That represents a massive discount for those who have traditionally used physical data warehouses for this service.?When Redshift was first announced in November 2012, Andy Jassy, the SVP and president of AWS, said that the typical cost of an equivalent data warehousing solution was $19,000-$25,000 per terabyte. “When we set out to build Amazon Redshift, we wanted to leverage the massive scale of AWS to deliver ten times the performance at 1/10 the cost of on-premise data warehouses in use today,” said?Raju Gulabani, VP of database services, AWS, in a statement. “With order of magnitude improvements in price/performance, Amazon Redshift makes big data analytics accessible to more people, allowing large

Fighting rages near Aleppo airport

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian rebels fought pitched battles Wednesday against regime forces at a military base that protects a major airport in the country's north in fighting that has left more than 40 government troops dead, opposition activists said.

Rebels have been attacking the civilian airport in the city of Aleppo for weeks, and now appear to have overrun the main defenses around the facility. But the airport itself, which stopped handling any flights weeks ago because of the fighting, still remains in regime hands.

On Tuesday, opposition fighters captured large parts of the "Brigade 80" base near the airport and attacked another major air base, Nairab, adjacent to the international airport after taking control of al-Manara army checkpoint just outside it.

By Wednesday, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the rebels were "almost fully in control" of the "Brigade 80" base. He said more than 40 government troops were killed in the fighting, including two brigadier generals, a colonel and two lieutenant colonels. The report could not be independently confirmed.

Heavy clashes were also still raging for control of the Nairab base as well as outside the civilian airport, which both have their own defenses in addition to the protection provided by Brigade 80.

Abdul-Rahman said the brigade is an air defense force that's main task is to protect the international airport and the Nairab air base.

Syria's rebels have notched several of strategic victories in recent days, capturing a military air base in the province of Aleppo on Tuesday and the country's largest dam on the Euphrates River the day before.

With the back-to-back blows to President Bashar Assad's regime, opposition fighters appear to be regaining some momentum in the nearly 2-year-old conflict, expanding their northern zone of control while at the same time pushing deeper into the heart of the capital, Damascus.

Activists reported clashes outside Damascus on Wednesday, with regime warplanes hitting several of the restive suburbs as part of a government offensive to dislodge opposition fighters from their strongholds around the capital. Fighter jets also carried out airstrikes on rebel positions in the central province of Homs, the Observatory said.

The rebels have been pushing their way into Damascus since last week, and came to within a mile of the heart of the capital on Friday. The foray marks the opposition's second significant attempt to storm Damascus since July, when the rebels captured several neighborhoods before being swept out by a swift government counteroffensive.

Since then, the regime has buckled down in Damascus, setting up checkpoint and controlling movement and out of the city with some of the government's most loyal troops. The heavily defended city so far has been spared the kind of violence that has devastated whole neighborhoods in other major cities such as Aleppo and the central city of Homs.

The rebels have had the most success in northern Syria, and have captured large parts of Aleppo, Idlib and Raqqa provinces since the Syrian conflict began in March 2011.

On Monday, U.N. human rights chief Navi Pillay said the number of people killed in Syria is probably now approaching 70,000. She told the U.N. Security Council that there have probably been almost 10,000 new deaths in recent weeks, adding that the council's deep division and inaction over the nearly two-year-old conflict had been "disastrous" and that civilians on all sides had paid the price.

In Moscow, the head of Russia's state arms trader said it will continue supplying weapons to Assad's government despite the escalating civil war.

Anatoly Isaikin, the director of Rosoboronexport, said that Russia sees no need to stop arms trade with Syria as it isn't prohibited by the U.N. Isaikin dismissed Western criticism of Russian arms sales to Damascus, saying that his company has only delivered defensive weapons.

"In the absence of sanctions, we are continuing to fulfill our contract obligations," Isaikin told reporters Wednesday. "But these aren't offensive weapons. We are mostly shipping air defense systems and repair equipment intended for various branches of the military.

Isaikin said more deliveries will be conducted under existing contracts, but gave no specifics.

Russia had been one of Assad's closes allies during since the beginning of the uprising, shielding the regime in Damascus from tougher sanctions by the U.N. The United States and its European allies have backed the opposition.

Proof of desktop licensing waste to convince more firms to jump to Google Cloud applications

BRACKNELL, United Kingdom - 14th February, 2013. Ancoris, the UK-based cloud services provider and Google Premier Enterprise Partner has announced a partnership with SoftWatch to provide their CloudIT Assessment service in the UK to monitor actual usage of Microsoft Office by user or department.

The joint offering will help Ancoris deliver the facts needed for potential Google Apps customers to make more informed, more confident transition decisions about the move to Google cloud applications.

The Ancoris AppsEvolve service, combining SoftWatch transition monitoring with training and change management services also helps existing Google Apps customers, which may have moved primarily for email, to identify user groups to migrate from Microsoft Office to Google Docs.

The SoftWatch CloudIT Assessment service profiles Microsoft Office users? working activities and patterns, including the frequency and amount of time the applications are used. This helps identify groups for transition to Google Docs and Drive, remove unused Microsoft software and reduce future licensing costs, as well as measure the adoption of Google Apps during the deployment phase.

Most companies can measure MS Office licenses deployed, but this service allows companies to see real usage and identify:
- Heavy users and editors using Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook - who may need to retain full MS Office licenses or need specific training to adopt Google Apps.
- Light users or view only users - who can easily migrate to Google Apps
- Non-users of MS Office - whose Office software can be removed

Outputs include classification of usage by users and departments and calculation of potential license optimisation opportunities - identifying the potential savings on MS licensing.

?CloudIT allows corporations to uncover actual usage?, says Moshe Kozlovski, CEO of SoftWatch. ?Our benchmark of over 100,000 users of Microsoft Office shows that over 80% of them are light users, enabling organisations to make an effective decision to migrate to Google Apps and significantly reduce Microsoft licensing spending.?

David McLeman, Managing Director at Ancoris explains: ?Google Apps for Business is already changing the way companies work, but we believe this partnership will provide invaluable data for organisations considering the adoption of cloud based applications and wanting to determine the full potential ROI of a cloud migration?.

The SoftWatch Cloud IT service is secure, simple to deploy, SaaS service and provides data within days. A six week Assessment period provides a comprehensive and inexpensive snapshot of the clients user base.

Banana Joe the affenpinscher wins Westminster

NEW YORK (AP) ? Banana Joe is very appealing, in any language.

The little affenpinscher with a monkey face added to his world of success Tuesday night, winning best in show at the Westminster Kennel Club.

"He speaks German, Dutch, Spanish and English," co-owner and breeder Mieke Cooijmans offered.

She was set to take Banana Joe back to the Netherlands on Wednesday. Now, the trip has been postponed for his victory lap.

With a bouncy step and shiny black coat, Banana Joe made up for near misses the last two years at Madison Square Garden and won America's premier dog competition. The 5-year-old wagged his tail a mile a minute and stuck out his pink tongue after earning his 86th best in show title overall.

"He's won a lot of big shows, but not like this one," handler Ernesto Lara said.

An old English sheepdog only 20 months old was picked as the runner-up on the green carpet of the Garden. Swagger the sheepdog drew the most cheers, but judge Michael Dougherty picked Banana Joe.

"He was presented in immaculate manner," Dougherty praised. "He was on the minute he walked in."

"He's in perfect condition, perfect body," he added.

Also in the best-of-seven final ring were a German wirehaired pointer ranked as the nation's No. 1 show dog, an American foxhound, a Portuguese water dog, a bichon frise and a smooth fox terrier.

Banana Joe had never gotten this far before. He entered the last two Westminsters with a lot of fanfare, yet didn't quite perform as expected and finished second in toy group judging each time.

Lara kept hoisting the dog officially named Banana Joe V Tani Kazari after he became the first affenpinscher to win at Westminster. The playful pooch enjoys tugging at his squeaky mouse toy ? now he can put it in the prized silver bowl he won.

There were 2,721 entries in 187 breeds and varieties at the 137th Westminster, including a pair of newcomers, the treeing Walker coonhound and the Russell terrier. The Russell terrier drew a cheer when it made the initial cut in the terrier group.

The old English sheepdog was clearly a crowd favorite. Maybe that's because fans knew his backstory ? this was just the fourth dog show Swagger had ever entered.

In fact, Swagger didn't even come to Westminster as a champion. In past years, only dogs who had won a lot in the past were eligible. This time, with a larger exhibition space along the Hudson River during the day, more dogs were allowed.

Certainly, it was worth the $75 entry cost for Swagger's owners.

Banana Joe, meanwhile, gets no prize money for winning Westminster. Instead, along with the silver bowl, the Garden champion earns a lifetime of prestige, plus lucrative breeding fees for its owners.

The Portuguese water dog ? the same breed that romps around the White House with President Barack Obama's family ? also arrived at 20 months old. Matisse, who got his name because his owners are art lovers, showed well while Obama was delivering his State of the Union address.

Matisse beat out Fifi the Doberman in the working group. The Fifinator, as she's known by her thousands of Facebook fans, won the group last year and came in second this time.

Hours earlier, Fifi was sound asleep in her crate, a red rabbit stuffed toy at her paws, looking like the most docile dog in the world. Not exactly how many people see a Doberman pinscher.

"They can be intimidating," owner-breeder-handler Jocelyn Mullins said.

That's why her rooters hoped she could win best in show this time.

"It would humanize the breed," Westminster Kennel Club President Sean McCarthy said. "A win for the Doberman would be an acceptance of that breed."

Libya focuses on border, integrating ex-fighters

PARIS (AP) ? Libya's government is struggling to control its borders and retrieve the arms and explosives that were looted after longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi's downfall, according to the conclusions of an international meeting on Libyan security on Tuesday.

Countries that backed the 2011 revolution offered words of caution and support two years later. Libyan Foreign Minister M. Mohamed Abdelaziz acknowledged that significant problems remained in Libya, first among them how to police its borders and manage restless former fighters who are taking their skills ? and troubles ? outside the country.

The vast frontier between Libya and Algeria has been a particular problem ? more than two dozen militants who seized control of the Ain Amenas gas installation in Algeria are believed to have crossed over the unpatrolled desert before taking hundreds of workers hostage.

Abdelaziz said a European Union training force would help, but he said his country had no need for foreign forces at the frontier. The communique said Libya instead would focus on integrating ex-fighters into a regular security force.

"Democracy will not be instituted by the Libyans alone," he said.

The central government has little authority beyond the capital, Tripoli, and the country is fractured by militias, tribes and regional loyalties.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague also emphasized the problem of border security. The Ain Amenas facility attacked by militants is jointly run by BP, Algeria's Sonatrach and Norway's Statoil, and at least four of the 37 foreign workers killed were from Britain.

"It is important of course that Libya is able to secure its borders. That it is able to make sure that there aren't ungoverned spaces particularly in the south of Libya, that militias can be demobilized," he said. Britain is among the countries offering to help train the Libyans.

The chaos in Libya after Gadhafi's fall has implications far beyond the border areas. Arms and explosives stockpiled by his governments are smuggled to Mali, Egypt and its Sinai Peninsula, the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip and to rebels fighting Syrian President Bashar Assad. Libyan fighters have joined rebels in Syria and are believed to operate in other countries as well.

Security In The Private Cloud: What Every Business Needs To Know ...

The onward march of cloud computing seems unstoppable and its benefits ? cost savings, scalability, business continuity ? are hard to dispute. However, like any area of information technology, it is important to understand the security implications of moving any part of business into the cloud. The impact of a security breach can be far-reaching, which is why senior managers need to familiarise themselves with what is at stake.

After all, we are talking about trusting sensitive corporate data ? including customer data, intellectual property and other content, such as information on new products ? to a third party.?It?s clear that organisations that outsource to a cloud vendor often make their choices based on price instead of security. Despite the undoubted advantages, making use of a cloud provider unfortunately opens the door to some risks.

This is why, despite many C-level non IT executives being keen to cloud environments, security executives tend to walk with much more trepidation. According to a recent research report by IDC, 74 percent of IT executives and CIOs have cited security as the top challenge preventing their adoption of the cloud services model.

The reality is that wherever data is hosted, vulnerabilities and exploits do not discriminate. The same holes that exist for cyber thieves lie within cloud providers as they do for data storage on-premise.

Who is responsible for security ? the cloud provider or the business user?

So is having a private cloud safer than the public cloud? The reality is that private cloud does not mean attackers will not try to enter. Indeed, the more sensitive and potentially valuable a company?s assets, the more likely an organisation will encounter a cyber security storm.

This begs the question: when a company is utilising a cloud provider, who is actually responsible if a breach occurs or what security measures are put in place? The apparent ambiguity as to who is responsible for securing the assets which makes up the private clouds creates the exact type of security gaps on which attackers can prey. It may come as some surprise that end user licence agreements for most cloud providers state that they are not responsible for security.

Cloud providers are responsible for providing servers with a certain operating system and a certain flavour, but buyers beware: in practice, this means they might not even know when a breach has occurred. In a 2011 Ponemon study, 42 percent of respondents of cloud service providers indicate they would not know if their organisations cloud apps or data was compromised by a security breach or data exploit.

The truth is that assets, in the cloud or on premise, are part of the business; so UK organisations need to treat them as such. Take the necessary steps to secure those servers, which organisations have every right to do, just as if the data was sitting down the hall in a server room.

Even though businesses are renting cloud capacity from these providers, they still have full access to assess and should approach them as part of their regular security practice. As cloud customers, businesses can still configure virtual servers and apply custom measures that comply with existing security strategies.

Tips to securing company data stored in a private cloud

So what can be done to ensure that the business?s cloud environment is secure? Here is some ?best practice? advice:

  • Include assets held in the cloud into your normal security and privilege access management strategy
  • Regularly assess the state of vulnerability by leveraging zero day vulnerability management solutions
  • Implement regular detection scans for critical risk access points, or potential breaches. Don?t wait for the cloud provider to inform you ? it may not do so
  • When employing a cloud service, review terms and conditions clearly, understanding the end user license agreements.

There are a wide variety of tools available that enable organisations to take the above steps easily and quickly, without major disruption to their existing IT infrastructures. The bottom line is that leaving private cloud security out of an organisation?s integrated strategy creates a major security gap, but if the right steps are taken, then businesses can leverage the advantages of cloud computing, safely and securely.

Lynne Peeples: State Of The Union: Obama Addresses Climate Change And Green Energy, Short On Details

President Barack Obama's State of the Union remarks fell in line with what many energy experts, industry representatives and environmental advocates predicted to me earlier today -- lots of rhetoric yet little detail on how to tackle climate change and propel green energy.

Also unsurprisingly, his words on the issues have already generated a range of reactions.

Obama focused his clean energy comments not only on the promise of green jobs, as he primarily has in the past, but on the dire consequences of not taking action on climate change.

"Yes, it's true that no single event makes a trend," Obama said. "But the fact is, the 12 hottest years on record have all come in the last 15.?Heat waves, droughts, wildfires, and floods -- all are now more frequent and intense.?We can choose to believe that Superstorm Sandy, and the most severe drought in decades, and the worst wildfires some states have ever seen were all just a freak coincidence.?Or we can choose to believe in the overwhelming judgment of science -- and act before it's too late."

The Institute for Energy Research was not impressed.

"It is telling that President Obama seemed more concerned about climate change than job creation, clearly following a well-worn path for this administration where no crisis goes to waste in pursuit of the President's progressive agenda," said IER president Thomas Pyle. "For this administration, a deadly hurricane means a chance for carbon taxes."

Frank Maisano, an energy strategist at the law firm Bracewell & Giuliani, was generally unexcited about the climate and energy section of Obama's speech, going as far as to suggest it "put everybody to sleep."

"His rhetoric was very similar to previous State of the Unions," Maisano told The Huffington Post. "And there was lots of similar hype from the environmental community in advance of it, and I suspect there will be following it."

Sure enough, responses so far from the environmental community appear animated -- and fairly positive.

Frances Beinecke, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council, used the term "assertive" as she described the agenda Obama laid out for reducing carbon pollution.

"The president has a full box of tools to strike back at climate chaos," she said in a statement. "The best tool he has is the Clean Air Act. It gives him the authority to reduce the carbon pollution from our dirtiest power plants, the single greatest threat to our climate future. That will take presidential leadership. Americans are counting on it -- and that's what the president delivered tonight."

Trip Van Noppen, president of Earthjustice, offered a similarly optimistic response: "We applaud President Obama's commitment to 'reduce pollution, prepare our communities for the consequences of climate change, and speed the transition to more sustainable sources of energy'," Van Noppen said in a statement. "The President's plan to 'cut in half the energy wasted by our homes and businesses over the next twenty years' is a great idea."

Forecast the Facts campaign director Daniel Souweine was more critical, however.

"While we are excited to hear the President connect the dots between climate change and increasingly severe weather, accurately explaining the problem is not nearly enough," he said in a statement. "Tonight, President Obama set the lowest possible bar for action -- he did not pledge to stop the carbon-spewing Keystone XL Pipeline nor promise carbon regulations on existing power plants. In fact, he pledged no specific actions at all."

Going after something like existing power plants in the State of the Union would have been "too much in the weeds," said Maisano, revisiting his suggestion from earlier today that the speech is about "broad strokes."

Also much to the chagrin of some environmentalists, Obama emphasized energy independence heavily in terms of home-harvested oil and natural gas. "We produce more natural gas than ever before -- and nearly everyone's energy bill is lower because of it," he said.

Still, Pyle of the energy group IER suggested that Obama isn't moving fast enough on oil and gas. "The President promised to 'keep cutting red tape and speeding up new oil and gas permits.' Yet his record is a more reliable indicator of his agenda than his rhetoric," he said. "Currently, it takes more than 300 days to get a permit to drill for oil or gas on federal lands, compared with 10 days in North Dakota where an energy boom has led to the lowest unemployment in the country. For all his talk of speeding up permits, it is telling that one permit remains on ice: the Keystone XL pipeline."

The President also pledged to continue the progress he's made in reducing carbon emissions -- from the doubling of renewable energy from wind and solar to increasing fuel economy standards for cars. He pleased environmentalists with a promise that, going forward, he won't let partisan politics get in his way.

"I urge this Congress to pursue a bipartisan, market-based solution to climate change," Obama said.?"But if Congress won't act soon to protect future generations, I will."

Obama salutes Panetta as he prepares to retire

(AP) ? Calling it "the honor of my life," Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said farewell to the U.S. military Friday, capping a venerated public service career that spanned four decades and included stints as a lawmaker, a top White House official and the spy chief who oversaw the killing of Osama bin Laden.

President Barack Obama, honoring his first-term Pentagon chief at a ceremony at a military base outside Washington, said Panetta would be remembered for welcoming more Americans into the military by opening combat roles to women and overseeing the repeal of a ban on gays serving openly ? "In short, for making our military and our nation that much stronger."

"Every decision he has made has been with one goal in mind: taking care of our sons and our daughters in uniform and keeping America safe," Obama said.

Panetta, the son of immigrants and self-described son of Italy, said he hoped in some small way to have helped to fulfill the dreams of his parents. As he spoke, row upon row of U.S. troops stood behind him, rifles and bayonets at their sides.

"It's been, for me, a hell of a ride," said Panetta, who served in Congress and in the Clinton administration before becoming Obama's CIA director and ultimately serving a brief but pivotal term as defense secretary.

"I will never forget the pride and exhilaration when I walked out of the White House after the president announced the success of the bin Laden operation," he recalled. "I could hear the chants of those people who were gathered around the White House and in Lafayette Park yelling, 'U.S.A. U.S.A.'"

Looming awkwardly over the formal farewell ceremony was the ongoing uncertainty about Panetta's replacement.

Obama has nominated former Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel, a Republican, to take over for Panetta, but Republicans have expressed deep misgivings about his previous statements about Iran, Israel and other issues. Days after postponing a vote on Panetta's confirmation amid GOP demands for more information, the Democratic chairman of the Senate's military panel said Friday he will press ahead with a vote.

Making no reference to the political hurdles, Obama said Hagel's mission would be to keep the U.S. military prepared and described Hagel as "a combat veteran with the experience, judgment and vision that our troops deserve."

Panetta has said he will remain on the job until the Senate confirms a successor. Then he will finally leave the Pentagon, returning home to his walnut farm in Carmel, Calif., after more than 40 years in Washington.

Panetta's tenure at the Pentagon was marked both by major milestones and a series of obstacles he and the military had to work to overcome. He oversaw the military's formal exit from Iraq and the start of the last drawdown of troops in Afghanistan, plus the end of a successful NATO campaign to rid Libya of Moammar Gadhafi.

But his attention was also diverted by prostitution scandals, spikes in sexual assaults and suicides, and ethical lapses by a handful of senior military leaders. An ongoing battle over spending cuts prompted Panetta to warn continually of the dire consequences of an underfunded military. Even as Panetta continued the efforts against al-Qaida, the threat from the terrorist group expanded in places like North Africa.

"We've overcome wars. We've overcome disasters. We've overcome economic depressions and recessions. We've overcome crises of every kind," Panetta said. "And throughout our history, the fighting spirit of our fellow Americans has made clear that we never, never, never give up."

Plan 9 From Outer Space (1959) | Movielady "Reviews" - seattlepi.com

??One of my earliest assignments began with a call from an old family friend, The Amazing Criswell, I felt my excitement level quickly mounting.? He invited me to the World Premier of his latest film, ?Plan 9 From Outer Space?.? Needless to say, I, along with everyone else, was eagerly awaiting the latest epic from avant gard director, Ed Wood Jr.? I had developed a school girl crush on Mr. Wood?s singular cinematic touch when I discovered his first film, ?Glen or Glenda?, a poignantly existential exploration of the true nature of identity, on the lower third of a drive-in triple feature in Plano, Texas.? The crush deepened into adoration with the viewing of his haunting love poem, ?Bride of the Monster?.?

Now, the whole city was abuzz with anticipation of, what many consider to be his definitive homage to film-noir producer Val Lewton.

?

Lewton, of course, is known for his creative use of shadow and lighting to build and sustain moods of suspense and terror. Wood had proven himself adept at building upon the techniques perfected by Lewton, and indeed, taking them in directions not even conceived of by the famous producer.

Another signature technique pioneered by Wood was the use of, as director Orson Welles called it, ?incongruous symbolism?.? In ?Bride of the Monster?, Wood playfully teases his audience with the seemingly inappropriate use of everyday objects.? In the director?s skilled hands, familiar objects magically transfigure into devices of diabolical manipulation.? This ground-breaking technique is most evident in the infamous ?laboratory scene? where the mad scientist, Dr. Eric Varnoff, ably played by Bela Lugosi, (who appears to be at the top of his form), threatens the heroine with what would logically be viewed as a simple photo enlarging device.? In Wood?s carefully constructed universe, the enlarger becomes the means to imbue the strength of a giant into the poor hapless victim, all to further Lugosi?s goal of building a race of supermen, a thinly disguised debasement of Hitler?s ?master plan?.? The only difference is that Hitler attempted to carry out his nefarious plan through carefully orchestrated genetic manipulation and the horrendous use of genocide, while Lugosi?s much more literal plan involved the use of the photo enlarger to ?enlarge? his victims.

"Relax, my dear, your head shots will be ready in about an hour."

The use of this technique is also evident in the final moments of the film.? Varnoff receives his ultimate moral retribution at the hands of a rubber octopus.? The obviously lifeless prop is loosely wrapped around Lugosi.? As he thrashes around, pulling the tentacles of the creature around him in a vain attempt to simulate a life or death struggle, the image on the screen takes on an almost otherworldly tint.? The audience, through Wood?s deft manipulation, is viewing a morality play of a much more universal nature.? Lugosi?s struggle in the limp arms of the octopus symbolizes humanity?s ongoing struggle against the imaginary demons of our own creation.? Birthed and carefully nurtured in our subconscious, we then proceed to wage a war of control over them, losing sight of the ultimate truth that the monsters have no life of their own outside the confines of the theater of the mind.?

The final scene in the movie shows the detonation of an atomic bomb.? As the audience watches the gently rising plume of radioactive smoke, Wood is saying that ultimately, there is no victory in this battle.? The struggle must inevitably end in self-destruction.?? A dark message indeed.

The night of the premier arrived.? After an introduction of the cast by Wood himself, a hush fell over the audience as the lights dimmed and the first flickering images of the opus were cast on the screen.

Ninety minutes later, a collective gasp signaled the end of the film and the beginning of a legend.? We all knew that we were in the presence of greatness.? The shared experience of viewing this masterpiece had indelibly united us with the symbiosis of art and genius we had just witnessed.

Wood had truly outdone himself.?

From the opening scenes poignantly telling the story of a bereaved old man, who ironically is reunited with his dead wife in an unholy union brought about by the ninth plan implemented by an invading alien force, to the final breathtaking doomed escape by the aliens, Wood?s deft touch is everywhere.

The surreal multi-use of props in variously changing roles creates the unreal world inhabited by Wood?s ?poor wretched creatures?.? The wall that forms the backdrop of the airplane cockpit also serves as the side of the alien ship.? The patio chairs do double duty as bedroom furniture.? The tiny scale of the cemetery set continually fosters the sense of d?j? vu that the director works so hard to achieve.? By constantly testing the boundaries between art and artifice, the real and the fake, the director keeps his audience off balance, vainly looking for some semblance of historically perceived reality to anchor their emotions.? Wisely, Wood refuses to succumb to this convention and paints a masterpiece of bizarre events coupled with incomprehensible emotional reactions.

?

Make sure you don't cross the strings!

But, as lush and exciting as this all sounds, it merely serves as a backdrop for the heart of the film, Wood?s?prescient rant on the horror of the military-industrial complex.? The sublime expository scene inside the spacecraft during the third act deftly outlines not only the plot points but the passion of the writer/director also.? In a moving speech, it is revealed that the aliens? purpose in taking over Earth does not lie in desire for domination, but in a last minute attempt to avert a universe-wide catastrophe.?

Eros, the leader, confronts a group of skeptical earthlings with the true nature of his plan.? The scientific minds of Earth are on a treacherous course of weapons discovery that will eventually lead to a bomb that could explode the whole universe, the ?Solaranite Bomb?.

Colonel Edwards:? Why is it so important that you want to contact the governments of our earth?
?

Eros: Because of death. Because all you of Earth are idiots!
?

Jeff Trent: Now you just hold on, Buster.
?

Eros: No, you hold on! First was your firecracker, a harmless explosive. Then your hand grenade: you began to kill your own people, a few at a time. Then the bomb. Then a larger bomb: many people are killed at one time. Then your scientists stumbled upon the atom bomb, split the atom. Then the hydrogen bomb, where you actually explode the air itself. Now you can arrange the total destruction of the entire universe served by our sun: The only explosion left is the Solaranite.
?

Colonel Edwards:? Why, there?s no such thing! Why, a particle of sunlight can?t even be seen or measured.

Eros: Can you see or measure an atom? Yet you can explode one! A ray of sunlight is made up of many atoms.
?

Jeff Trent: So what if we do develop this Solaranite bomb? We?d be even a stronger nation than now.
?

Eros:??Stronger.? You see? You see? Your stupid minds! Stupid! Stupid!

The impassioned plea continues with an appeal to intelligence and metaphor.

Colonel Edwards:? You speak of Solaranite. But just what is it?
?

Eros:? Take a can of your gasoline. Say this can of gasoline is the sun. Now, you spread a thin line of it to a ball, representing the earth. Now, the gasoline represents the sunlight, the sun particles. Here we saturate the ball with the gasoline, the sunlight. Then we put a flame to the ball. The flame will speedily travel around the earth, back along the line of gasoline to the can, or the sun itself. It will explode this source and spread to every place that gasoline, our sunlight, touches. Explode the sunlight here, gentlemen, you explode the universe. Explode the sunlight here and a chain reaction will occur direct to the sun itself and to all the planets that sunlight touches, to every planet in the universe. This is why you must be stopped. This is why any means must be used to stop you. In a friendly manner or as (it seems) you want it.

A fist fight immediately breaks out between the Earthlings and the aliens, resulting in a riveting and dramatic denoument that I refuse to spoil for you, my dear readers.

?

"Are you SURE this is how Karloff started?"

This movie will stand as the testament of Ed Wood?s life and beliefs.?? His humanity, his kindness and his eerily precognitive ability to predict the future are all on display in this, his magnum opus.? I truly believe that all future cautionary fables will forever pale in comparison to this masterpiece.? I see this movie being the focal point of special screenings where its growing legion of fans can gather together in mutual appreciation of Ed Wood?s legacy.? My fervent prayer is that technology someday advances to the point were every American can own this picture so that it can be viewed over and over again with like-minded friends and relatives, basking in the respect it so richly deserves.

Michelle Hansen Tags Home With Message to ... - AOL Real Estate

Cases of homeowners struggling against their banks to fend off foreclosure are a dime a dozen these days. But Michelle Hansen of Aurora, Colo., is upping the ante against JPMorgan Chase, which she says is refusing to grant her a loan modification after she became delinquent on her mortgage. What's her tactic? She's using her own house to publicly shame the bank, scrawling a message across her garage door that says: "JPMorgan Chase is stealing this home."

"They think everyone's just going to go away," Hansen (pictured below) told KMGH-TV in Denver of her bank. "I think they picked the wrong house." Hansen is doing anything but going away -- she's fighting back. The entirety of the message addressed to JPMorgan and its CEO, Jamie Dimon, that Hansen spray painted on her home reads: "Jamie Dimon & JPMorgan Chase, JPMorgan Chase is stealing this home. Ignores homeowner for 21 months!! I will not violate federal law on your behalf as a condition of communication from you! Call me. Chase Me!!" Hansen ends the note with a heart sign.

According to Hansen, she notified JPMorgan in May 2011 that she had fallen on hard times and would not be able to pay her mortgage payments. She said the bank promised to work with her on getting a loan modification, then refused to do so two months later. "You're told, 'We need A, B and C,' so you give them A, B and C, and then, 'No, we need this and then we'll talk to you,'" Hansen said. "So you did it, and they keep lying."

JPMorgan Chase said in a statement, "Chase does not own this mortgage but services it on behalf of its investor, Fannie Mae, and must follow all investor guidelines." It's easy for distressed homeowners in these types of situations to view the banks as the bad guys, but to be fair, Chase recently began refinancing thousands of loans. Last year, as part of the $25 billion mortgage settlement, Chase offered $4.2 billion toward mortgage relief to slash the interest rates and principal loan balances of thousands of underwater borrowers.

Hansen's attorney, Keith Gantenbein, said many Colorado homeowners find themselves in situations similar to Hansen's because the state's foreclosure practice is "very one-sided for lenders." He told KMGH, "There isn't a lot of due process protections for borrowers to say, 'Hey, I don't feel like I'm being treated fairly.'" The Gantenbein Law Firm estimates that about 20 percent of borrowers are underwater in Colorado. Nationally, 28.2 percent of borrowers were underwater in the third quarter of 2012, according to Zillow.

Hansen said her message to Chase was a last-ditch effort to save her home. "Doing this and making it personal, writing to Jaime Dimon was hard," she said. "I never wanted to pick a fight with the bank, but you can make a choice. You can make a choice to stand up for what you believe in."

iMore Editors' Choice: Spaceteam, Elago M2 dock, Moviegram, and more

iMore Editors' Choice: Spaceteam, Elago M2 dock, Moviegram, and more

Every week, the editors and writers at iMore carefully select some of our favorite, most useful, most extraordinary apps, accessories, gadgets, and websites. This week's selections include a few games, an Apple service that is easy to take for granted, an awesome iPhone dock, and a fitness app.

iCloud - Chris Oldroyd

This week I have chosen a built in service provided by Apple that up until recently I totally took for granted. This week, iCloud totally saved my bacon after a disastrous problem with a jailbreak app update rendered my iPhone 5 unusable, first thing in the morning, 60 minutes before heading to work.

I am a casual jailbreaker, I did the jailbreak a couple of days after it was released and all I had installed was Lockinfo and BiteSMS. They both had updates that morning and after the updates, something went seriously wrong. The iPhone 5 restarted and the screen was all distorted with multi colors everywhere and the actual iPhone home screen was in the top corner a quarter of its normal size; it was all a bit weird to say the least.

I managed to get into the Settings and initiate the Erase All Content and Settings function but that wouldn?t complete so I had to do a complete restore via iTunes on my PC. I then ran out of time and had to leave for my meeting. Thankfully, I had all of my apps and settings backed up to iCloud and by using a MiFi wireless network in my car I managed to get all of my apps, settings, contacts and pictures restored on route and my iPhone 5 was back to normal just before I got to the meeting?..what a relief!

iCloud is so underrated, it works in the background backing up your device every night when it?s connected to power and WiFi and is a real life saver when something goes wrong like it did for me. I have learned my lesson with jailbreaking for now at least ad I am so grateful to iCloud for making the whole process of getting things back to normal as painless as possible!

Moviegram - Joseph Keller

Moviegram is a great way to look up movies when you?re trying to decide which one you go see. By pulling in ratings from three different sources, Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, and IMDb, Moviegram can give you a comprehensive picture on whether or not a movie is worth seeing. You can either search for movies or select them from an available list. Each movie?s page will display basic information such as a synopsis, the cast, and a trailer if one is available. Tap on a cast member to see their other films. Moviegram is a universal app, and available for free, with a $0.99 in-app purchase to remove the ads.

Elago M2 dock for iPhone and iPad - Ally Kazmucha

I've been on the hunt for a dock for my iPhone 5 ever since Apple didn't release one. I'm not a fan of cases so I've never had a problem with the stock Apple version. After coming up empty handed several times, I finally found one that looked like not only would it work for my iPhone, but my iPad mini and regular sized iPad as well, and that was the Elago M2.

When you spend as much time as I do with apps and reviewing them, it's nice to dock your iPhone or iPad next to your computer so you don't have to keep picking it up time and again to view something. I've found it supports any device in any orientation extremely well. The Elago M2 dock is not only versatile, but super sharp looking. It comes in both black and silver so regardless what iPhone or iPad you have, you'll have one that matches. It's also a lot cheaper than some options out there.

The only issue I've found is that the back is flat metal which made me a little nervous when it comes to scratching. I didn't have any issues but I also easily remedied that by sticking a small rubber circle on the back to add some extra cushion. Not necessary but a cheap way to add a little extra padding and grip. If you're a dock fan and haven't found a perfect one yet, I'd highly recommend checking out the Elago M2.

Metal Slug 2 - Chris Parsons

If you're looking for a run-and-gun action shooter, then there is nothing really better than the classic Metal Slug. Unless of course, you're speaking of Metal Slug 2! Ported from the original NEOGEO, Metal Slug 2 is builds off of the classic while adding some new great features into the mix called "Mission Mode". New characters, new weapons and more will keep you pounding away at Metal Slug 2. It's $3.99 right now but it has tremendous replay value.

Spaceteam - Rene Ritchie

I was sitting at a party at Macworld|iWorld 2013, minding my own business, when Arnold Kim from MacRumors broke out Spaceteam and began to play it with some of the designers and game developers there. Everything went straight to hell from there.

Here's why -- Spaceteam is a multiplayer game where you connect two iOS devices over a shared Wi-Fi network, or a direct Bluetooth connection, and then go into co-op chaos. The goal is to take your ship to collective warp, and you're given instructions -- convoluted, gobbledegook instructions -- on how to do so, but the buttons you have to press and levels you have to adjust might be on your device? or they might be on someone else's.

And so the yelling begins. Soon everyone is barking out directions, hunting furiously to act on what they see, and what's being screamed at them, in an effort to get to hyperspace.

It gets faster and more furious as you go on, and the interface starts falling apart on you.

It's not pretty. But it's pretty awesome.

Two Hundred Situps - Leanna Lofte

Three weeks ago, I gave birth to my second daughter and it's time for me to get back into shape. One of the big problem areas is my core, so I've turned to Two Hundred Situps to help get toned up. I've only started using it today, but I've gone through the One Hundred Situps app by the same developer and it was great.

The way Two Hundred Situps works is that you take an initial "test" which is simply to do as many situps as you can. The app then develops a program for you that will have you doing 200 consecutive situps in six weeks -- and all it takes is 30 minutes a week!

Considering it's the end of Exercise Week in Mobile Nations Fitness Month, now is the perfect time to pick this one up!

Your choice?

Now that we've chosen our favorites for the week, we want to hear yours! Did you pick up a killer app, accessory, or game this week? Let us know in the comments below!
